Back
To School Time!
It's
that time again. Parents smile and children groan. Yes, back to
school! Though most of our back-to-school safety tips are common
sense tips, it's still worth taking a few minutes to refresh
yourself on the basics!
Riding
the Bus!
School
bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars!
Even so, last year, approximately 26 students were killed and
another 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses.
More often than not, these deaths and injuries didn't occur in a
crash, but as the pupils were entering and exiting the bus.
Remember these safety tips:
Have
a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the
street.
Stay
away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the
driver signals you to enter.
Stay
away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that
it's okay to approach.
Be
aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to
follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses,
however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!

Walking and
Biking to School
Even if you
don't ride in a motor vehicle, you still have to protect
yourself. Because of minimal supervision, young pedestrians
face a wide variety of decisions making situations and dangers
while walking to and from school. Here are a few basic safety
tips to follow:
Mind all
traffic signals and/or the crossing guard -- never cross the
street against a light, even if you don't see any traffic
coming.
Walk your
bike through intersections.
Walk with a
buddy.
Wear
reflective material...it makes you more visible to street
traffic.

Internet
Safety
Tips
An
absolute must is that your child should NEVER arrange
a face to face meeting with anyone he or she meets
online.
Teach
your child to never give out personal information
online including pictures of anyone. Other personal
information that should never be given out online
includes real names, age, race, address, city,
telephone number(s), names or location of his or her
school (including the name of the school's teams),
family income, names of friends, passwords, credit
card information. Information you send or receive over
the internet is NOT private.
Make
it a condition of use that your child must always ask
your permission before using the internet.

Sign
Program Information
It's
time to again thank those citizens and community members
in Salem for their help and support for the successful
launch of our Child Safety Watch sign program!
Installed
in early June were the first Child Safety Watch signs
in and around Salem Neighborhoods!
Very
much a community effort, special thanks go to Decola
Paving for their generous
funding of the initial signs. Thanks also go to
Captain William Ganley of the Salem PD for his insight
and direction. Sign installation was completed within
several days by the generous efforts of the Salem
Department of Public Works. A heartfelt thank to all!
The
sign program will continue this fall with
installations at Hedgehog Park and the Field of
Dreams.
